Open Position:  Lab Technician

Job Description

 

The full-time Lab Technician will join an essential team involved in our development of oral antibody-based therapeutics. The team member will be expected to execute leading edge molecular biology protocols, support the construction of novel cyanobacteria strains, and aid in the continued development of protocols that have made Lumen Bioscience the worldwide leader in Spirulina genetic engineering.  

The position requires strong organizational skills to meet quality and productivity goals. Effective communication skills are also crucial in coordinating with other members of the team, providing status updates, and raising quality or trouble shooting issues as they may arise. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

The major tasks for this position are as follows:

  • Routinely execute molecular biology protocols

  • Grow, maintain, characterize, analyze, and archive cyanobacteria cell cultures 

  • Perform molecular biology techniques and general lab maintenance activities

    • PCR 

    • DNA purification 

    • Sequencing sample preparation and results analysis 

    • Reagent preparation 

    • Preparation and maintenance of DNA and cells for archival purposes 

  • Manage libraries of DNA and cellular stocks

  • Provide written reports and regularly present work at group meetings

Desired Qualifications & Requirements

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related fields 

  • 1-2 years of prior laboratory experience is essential, preferably in microbiology, chemistry, or biochemistry 

The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

 

  • Strong communication both written and verbal

  • Strong computer, documentation, and time management skills

  • Maintain accurate and well-organized laboratory notebooks.

  • Commitment to quality and timely delivery of results

  • Engage with members of the team in experimental design, troubleshooting, data analysis, data interpretation.

  • Self-starter, able to contribute effectively in a fast-changing environment

  • The ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment

  • High integrity and ethics

  • Respect laboratory safety policies and practices

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Sit for extended periods of time (2 or more hours)

  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 20 kg

About Lumen

Lumen Bioscience was founded in early 2017 to make and commercialize ultra-low-cost biologics, such as antibodies, in our proprietary spirulina expression platform. We design and manufacture therapeutics against disease targets that have been inaccessible to the pharmaceutical industry because of the astonishingly high cost of using traditional methods to make and deliver biologic drugs. Now, for the first time, Lumen can make antibodies and other biologics at a cost that allows for daily, high-dose, oral delivery.

Our current programs focus on diseases that can be prevented or treated by an orally delivered therapeutic; the target markets are enormous, the treatment modes of action are well-researched, and the unmet medical need is obvious. We have been fortunate to have earned financial support for these programs from groups like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the NIH.  In the longer term, we believe that our unique technology–––the ability to safely deliver frequent, large doses of a wide range of biologic compounds–––will become commonplace in biopharma as the science continues to advance and uncover new opportunities in the fields of microbiome signaling, metabolism, inflammation, and oral delivery of systemic biologics.
